when im just gonna use it on my computer do i still need to plug to the outlet? because i have an external hardrive now, and it doesn't have an outlet, i just need plug the USB.

not sure what your asking, but if your talking about a high def disc player, you need to do some home work,system requirements are high and specific, if you mean an external hd or dvd burner, most come with external power supplies and usb connectors, don,t buy usb powered(no external ps) unless your sure your power supply can handle the high load

Not all usb external hard drives need external power. See http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-WDXMS1200TN-Passport-Drive/dp/B000HZGQ9C for an example.

It just depends on your make/model of hard drive.
