Because if they dropped them they would break?
Sorry, bad joke.
They laid eggs --past tense because there aren't any now-- as their method of reproduction. Icthysaurus may have given birth to live young the way mammals do, but as far as I know they are the only example. I have actually seen a fossilized Icthysaur with a smaller one --a baby-- fossilized in the Icthysaur's abdomen. You should find a picture of that fossil on the 'Net.
If dinosaurs gave rise to the birds, then that helps to explain why birds lay eggs. Boy, am I glad they do, too. I like mine over easy on pancakes. Ooops, I wandered off subject. Sorry.
:)

As the most successful reptiles of their day, dinosaurs laid eggs because of the many biologically useful qualities of eggs. Animals began laying eggs because the hard shells protected offspring better than the soft, jelly-like eggs laid by amphibians. Eggs also contained enough nutrients to allow mothers to leave eggs behind, although fossil evidence suggests that some dinosaurs were active nesters, staying behind to guard their creche.
Since the majority of dinosaur species were roughly the size of a chicken, their eggs were a similar size to the eggs you have for breakfast. Larger species and larger eggs did exist, however.
One species, called the oviraptor, was once thought to feed on eggs exclusively, but recent fossil evidence suggests the small bipedal dinosaur ate insects and other small prey instead.

First off, dinosaurs do lay eggs. Chickens are, or certainly should be, considered a type of dinosaur. It is silly to call dinosaurs reptiles. They are far from the cold blooded lizards and snakes. They are far more like birds. This is evidenced by their blood vessels in their bone which is more like a warm blooded animal. Their growth is more rapid like a warm blooded animals. Dinosaurs aren't the primitive animals some would like them to be.
