Under 6-8 weeks you need to wake them because some babies do not have the ability to wake themselves when hungry. That isn't to say you should keep a routine when it comes to feeding, because you shouldn't you should feed on demand. But if a little baby goes longer than 5 hours without food you should feed them. Most babies can eat and only be half awake.

My grandma used to say, never wake up a sleeping baby lest his life span will be reduced!

True, the new born sleeps almost the whole day to start with and he needs rest like he used to enjoy when he was in the womb and he takes a few months to get adjusted to this busy world.

Whenever he feels hungry automatically he will wake up and cry, till then not to disturb him. But, keep a watch on how long he sleeps after feeding. If the duration is more than normal, check and find whether he is well or not and do the needful.

So, it is both that you should keep a watch, ie., not to wake up a sleeping baby and at the same time ensure he does not oversleep skipping the normal feed time due to sickness sort of.

You don't HAVE to wake a baby for a feeding unless baby is not gaining weight at all and needs extra feedings.

As far as scheduling a baby - that is a personal parenting choice. Some swear by it and others are against it. This is the track where you are the mom and you do what is right for you! I personally would let the baby sleep - they obviously need it. But then I never kept my kids on tight schedules and they weren't early at sleeing though the night or anything (that was okay with me).

So if you want feeding times and bedtimes to be be very schedule then wake him up...but if it doesn't feel natural to you - let him sleep.

Being a mom is about trusting your own instincts...YOU really are the one that makes the best choices for your baby.

It is up to you but here are my thoughts:

As long as your baby is not underweight, let the little guy sleep. That way you can sleep too or get some things done around the house - cause all new moms need time for both of those things.

If he is underweight, you probably should wake him up every three hours or so and feed him.

If he's having a hard time sleeping at night, get him up and try to keep him up during the day for a few hours between feedings.

I was told not to let a newborn go past 4 hours without eating but sometimes she would go 5 and then wake up to feed. I dont know what to tell you...I always just figured they will wake when they are hungry.

A very young newborn (like under two weeks old) may need to be woken up ....only if baby is jaundiced, or for some reason is really knocked out you MAY need to wake him up .....but if baby nursing around every 2 - 3 hours during the day and 3 -4 at night dont bother to wake. theres time enough for a schedule after baby is 3 months old or so....and then its up to you.

I would only wake baby if it is past 4 hours. That's what I did w/my newborn and she is absolutely fine! She would wake herself normally after about 3 hours of hunger. Once in a while, I would have to wake her for a feeding because it exceeded 4 hours. Otherwise, it is not imperative that you wake bub. They will wake when they are hungary or need to be changed. They really aren't as difficult as you think. (Yeah right, I went nutz when my bub was a newborn so I take that comment back lol)

Do what you think is best. I breastfed mine too in the beginning so babies that are breastfed are usually hungary quicker than formula fed babies so, if she slept for longer than 4 hours, I thought it was unusual.

I never woke my newborn to eat, my doctor told me only to wake her if she slept more that 7 or 8 hours without waking up and normally she would wake up after 6. I believe in "demand" feeding not schedules.

During the day I would wake up my son if he was sleeping for more than 5 hours. I wasn't afraid of him getting of his feeding schedule, I just figured I'd rather have him sleep at 5 hour or more intervals at night instead of during the day. He began sleeping through the night at about 8 weeks.
