Social work ecompasses many job descriptions. You could work in a hospital or community based. Social workers tend to work from either a clinical or anti-oppressive base. It can involve case work, policy, group facilitation and advocacy for marginalized groups including women, at-risk youth, child protection, LGTBQ, the elderly (gerontology), ethinic and relgious groups etc. It's a profession that has a vast area of work options. There are many people with social work education that don't use the title in the work they do including, social policy advisors, teachers, politicians and urban planners.

Social work is a profession based on enhancing the capacity of people to participate in society and engaging in enhancing the capacity of society to include all people in it. In essence to enhance social justice and democracy (in its best sense). It is ultimately about making society work. As the previous responder indicated the range of jobs, areas that you might find a social worker working in are varied and diverse we work across systems (individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations) and with the full range of social problems.
