Turn it on, and it should come up and tell you.
Windows 95/98/2000/XP all have splash screens, and if the machine is already booted, go into the start menu, pick control panel, and choose 'system', and it will tell you the exact release and service packs you are running.
If it is a mac, it should tell you as it boots as well.
If it just comes up with a black screen and a C:\ prompt it is in dos.
If it works correctly, it's probably got linux on it.

It usually says on the login screen. If it just says GNOME, KDE, or Welcome to (computer name), chances are you're running Linux.
If you see the Windows logo, it's windows XP.
If it's an old style Windows logo, you've probably got Windows 2000.
If your computer lets anyone log on as long as they have a name, you've probably got Windows 95/98
If the old-style logo is in a blue box, and you have to type WIN when the computer starts to use it, you have Windows 3.1 and DOS!
If there's an apple on the login screen, you probably have Mac OS X
If you see a cube that smiles at you, you probably have Mac OS 7.6, 8, or 9.
If you see a screen that says "Welcome to Macintosh", with symbols to the left of a computer, you've got Mac System 7 or earlier...System 7.1 was my favorite OS of all time...

You could also open any folder, go to Help and then About Windows and it should tell you what you have, service pack and all.
