A normal pregnancy is anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks long.
Dilation and effacement mean NOTHING unless you are actually in active labor. You can walk around for a week or more 100% effaced and 3-4 cm dilated. Or you can be closed up tight as a bank vault and have a baby a few hours later. DO NOT obsess over your progress (or lack of progress) right now. Many midwives won't even check you until you are in labor!
WALK. Walking a lot may help bring baby down further into your pelvis. This will help put more pressure on your cervix and might help with dilation and effacement.
Use Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) nightly. Take 2 capsules and prick them with a pin. Insert them up near your cervix. If you want, you can squeeze the oil out and rub it into your cervix. This will help to ripen your cervix. (It WILL NOT induce labor.)
Have a lot of sex. Semen helps to ripen the cervix. (If they give you prostaglandin gel in the hospital.....it contains pig semen! I'd rather have hubby's, thanks!) Orgasm can bring on contractions which might turn into real labor.
Consider having a prenatal massage and/or a chiropractic adjustment to make sure your body is in balance.
And most of all......be patient. Your body and your baby will know when it is the right time.

With a first pregnancy baby may not drop until labor starts. My first pregnancy I was 0 cm dilated and totally high all the way up until I had her. Each woman is different...some drop and walk around dilated forever....others do it all at once. Don't hope for things to happen before week 38...you really want your labor and birth to be as normal as possible and if you go early then that means more specialists and stuff.
If baby is head down...then that is really all the matters at this point as far as going into labor when your time comes.

I have had two babies already and pregnant with my third, with the first I really did not try to induce labor myself except for walking alot (he was born at 36 weeks) but with the second I was having a lot of back pain and was ready to have him, my doctor told me to have sex, something about semen helps you start dilating and having an orgasm can help start contractions. I also had an exercise ball and would bounce on it softly everyday the last couple of weeks, he did not come until three days before his due date. Everyone has told me babies will come when they are ready! Good Luck!

Why do you wanna give birth already!! It takes 39-40 weeks of pregnany before giving birth. Besides hasn´t your doctor told you already when your estimated due date should be?! You don´t have to worry about cervix dilating just yet. You´ll know it when you go into labor. Then, usually walking around helps drop the baby lower down. I really think you have no reason to worry about this now. what does your doctor say?

You are still "early" in your gestation, the baby could still drop and your cervix still has time to open over the next few weeks. Just relax and let things happen, although walking will help naturally induce labor along with having sex if you and your partener are still up for it.l
