Building anything in the US is best done through a licensed building contractor. I put a link up as an example below. Contractors have to demonstrate the results of their training and experience on tests, and the tests aren't very easy.

The thing about using a contractor is that he or she has to know not only the best building practices but the laws. I've added a link about Kansas City.

Ask at a chamber of commerce near you, or go to where businesses are licensed at the county court house if you can't find them in the local phone book yellow pages.

Having a contractor build your house will avoid legal problems if it would have otherwise been built wrong. It will help you get insurance on the building and there will be fewer problems when you go to sell your house.
