There is a provision in the new Minimum Wage Bill that allows for the exemption of the American Territory of Samoa. Why do you think they would do that? There is a StarKist Tuna Canning Facility in American Samoa. Can't hurt the tuna industry with wage hikes can we? Especially when StarKist is headquartered in, you guessed it: San Francisco.

The best was when Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (R-NC) raised a parliamentary inquiry as to whether an amendment could be offered that would exempt American Samoa from stem-cell research, "just as it was for the minimum-wage bill." Barney Frank lost his head, slamming his gavel... it was hilarious.

Such hypocrisy. Read more:

"Faleomavaega has said he does not believe his island's economy could handle the federal minimum wage, issuing statements of sympathy for a Samoan tuna industry competing with South American and Asian canneries paying workers as little as 66 cents an hour. The message got through to House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.), the sponsor of the minimum-wage bill that included the Marianas but not Samoa, according to committee aides. The aides said the Samoan economy does not have the diversity and vibrancy to handle the mainland's minimum wage, nor does the island have anything like the labor rights abuses Miller found in the Marianas."

Maybe you should read the links before you attach something that destroys your 'story'. raising them to the federal minimum wage would be like us raising the wage to $50 in the homeland.. so they spared them from that horrid blow to their economy an you complain? So democrats really are the only people with hearts.. doing something good for people knowing republicans would try to hang them.

It would be hard for any Liberal to admit that the Dems are doing something to line their own pockets...maybe some of them should resign because of it...just like they always want Reps to do...oh yea Pip the raise would make Samoa's economy better the only people who would have to pay the minimum wage would be the parent company in San Fran not Samoa...so giving them the raise would put money in the average Samoaian's pocket and take it out of Pelosi's constituency's...

AS is self governing. They set their own wages. Also you neglect to mention that the Starkist plant is right next to the Chicken of the Sea processing plant.

Starkist is owned by Del Monte btw.

I don't see the problem. If you give a higher rate of pay to Samoa workers then they may get the idea of forming a union then they will demand more money driving the price of tuna up resulting in me paying more for a can of tuna.
