Hey guys, i recently received my router to connect my laptop to the net wirelessly, and while trying to install the device into my desktop, i realised that my computer does not have an ethernet slot! Hence I am unable to connect my router to my desktop and am totally puzzled what to do now. Do I have any options other than getting myself a new desktop? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. In case you are wondering, I got my desktop in 2001 (yeah i know its old, lol), its a compaq presario. i dont have the model no. to hand.

You can either:

a) buy a network card and install it (if you have an open PCI slot)

b) buy a USB wireless receiver/transmitter (if you have a USB port)

c) buy a USB to ethernet convertor

Is you don't mind a 54 Mbs connection, there are small usb devices you can get that connect you to the Wi fi. Really handy stuff, but watch out on the security aspect. You may need extra software to cover that, but the small usb Port devices that connect you to Wi fi are currently going cheap at various places including Tiger direct, and Compusa

My comp. is also a dinosaur, from 2000, but over a year ago, I took it to the computer guy in town, who installed an ethernet card for about $15 so I could get cable internet. Long live dinosaur pcs!! :)

well u could buy an ethernet card for $20 bucks and easily install it into your motherboard which will support it via PCI or if your desktop has a wireless card (which im assuming it doesnt) then you could creat an ad-hoc network computer to computer google it for more info

Unless you've done some serious upgrading to that laptop you're going to be sorely disappointed after you get connected. Have you tried surfing with a dial-up connection. I doubt that you will get much done online with that laptop.

So I'm saying here, if you got some coins, buy a newer laptop and don't get caught buying piece-meal upgrades that will eventually cost more than a newer laptop.
