it was definitely Terry Venables but he was only a co-author with Gordon Williams and the series was spelt Hazell with Nicholas Ball in the title role with a cop walled 'Choc' Minty. Hope this is OK any other info get back to me

terry venables co wrote the series, he was of course an england manager, not just an international. LF
