We married 10 years ago and the divorce is going to be long and tiring so it will take about two more years. We have two under 7 kids. He makes $350,000 per year. I said $2500 a month is fine but I am told that I should ask for more. (He left his family for another woman. Should that matter?)

Even though I have three degrees, I cannot pay the mortgage for the house that he insisted on buying and that his kids live in. Maybe I should let him and the honey raise the kids. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have a very similar case. Basically same income but three kids not two. However how many kids does not matter for this question. I pay $86,000 a year in alimony. I will pay this forever unless she gets remarried. I think she is to smart for that thought. If I were in her position I would never give up the $86,000 a year. It would be nice for me though.

Don't be a sponge.....take what you need for the children...not yourself....the ex-wife deserves nothing but the right to go find a job and support herself then he can support his children!
Yes maybe you should let him and honey raise the kids....then see what you think the alimony should be then!

Take him for what he has. Don't sit there and take little when you can get more. He wasted your 10 years and then to leave you for another woman. Don't feel bad for him. He got you and your kids used to a lifestyle and he should continue to maintain his children. You are intitled to alimony and definately childsupport.

[...] I cannot pay the mortgage [...] and that his kids live in.
CORRECTION: these children are yours too!
Otherwise, I think you should ask for as much as you can get. Really!
TO THE VOTERS: what was wrong with my answer?!
Isn't it correct that any child has 2 (a.k.a. TWO) parents, who are equaly responsible?! So what's so wrong in TRYING to make him pay WHATEVER THE LAW SAYS?!
Besides, one must ask for more in order to get less; an ELEMENTARY RULE of negotiation!!... !

What? You can take care of yourself! Did you earn the money? I think not! What did you do to get proper training/education during your marriage to take care of yourself if you needed to?
