Let me first start out by saying, some of the answers here are rude!

I am a mother of a DS baby, she just turned 5 months you dont know how hard it is to deal with and NOBODY I mean nobody has the right to call my child nor anyone elses disabled child any names. Can you imagine thinking your having a healthy baby and then just have your entire world turned upside down?

Its not the parents fault! Its just something that happens.

Downs isnt that bad, its actually pretty rewarding and it opens your eyes to something you couldnt see before.
I still cry from time to time, its hard to realize that your precious baby has downs but they are just as beautiful as another "normal" baby. My daughter does the same things other newborns do actually she is more advanced and her skills arent as bad as most babies with DS.

It will take time to heal, it takes patience, it takes love and trust me you willl begin to love every minute of your child.

I have been through so much the last 5 months, I gave birth to my daughter and she need surgery to correct a common DS birth defect, I barely saw her, she was in the NICU for a month and it was the hardest thing ever, it took me forever to bond iwth her just because she was different and the only regret I have now is that I didnt love her the way I do now and that is horrible.

Its hard to deal with and like I said you will cry a lot, you will have lots of different stages of emotions but just remember babies are babies they are cute & loveable and need to be loved no matter who they are or what they become.

Things happen for a reason and you may think why did this happen to me, trust me I have been there but I can honestly say after you get over the grief part you will be happy.

If you want to talk email me, I can show you part of my world and try to show you its not that bad.

I will leave you with this

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

This is the preferred term for mongolism, a variety of congenital moderate to severe mental retardatioin. Marked by sloping forehead, presence of epicanthal folds causing an Oriental appearence of the eyes, grey, or yellow spots at the periphery of the iris, short broad hands, a flat nose, low set ears, and a dwarfed physique. People with Down's Syndrome have an extra chromosone, # 21 or #22. The disease is named after J. Langdon Downs, a British physician who lived from 1828-1896.

We need more specificity than this. Go to Wikipedia.com if you want to just read up on what it is. If you're looking for a support group or information on caring for a child affected by Down's, then you need to ask more specific questions here.

Good luck!
