Many fish, goldfish included, change colours as they get old. They may lose or develop spots, colour, sheen, etc, and it's a normal process.
However, a stressed or unhealthy fish may also lose colour and become grey and dull-looking. Does your fish look sick? Is it lethargic and inactive? Clamped fins? Gills moving really quickly? Look for other symptons to rule out illness as a cause for the colour change.
A good 'cure-all' that'll boost his energy, if you cannot pinpoint an illness, is salt. Add 1 flat tbsp aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water, disolved first in dechlor water. You can also feed colour-enhancing foods which can boost his colour brightness.

Goldfish tend to change color. Most change during the first year of life, but others change throughout their lifetimes. Inexpensive goldfish change in unpredictable ways because their parentage is uncertain and their color genes represent a random mix.
It's really nothing at all to worry about, but colour enhancing food with lots of beta-carotene may help to bring out the colour.

I don't know really. One of my friends set her goldfish on the window in the sun once and it turned white! I'm not recommending that (she was only little at the time) - it went on to live anothr 12 years or so, so I don't think it did it any permanent harm.
My fish seem to change colour a lot, and they never seem to get ill!

If you leave a goldfish in the dark for too long it turns white!!! Make sure it has plenty of light during daytime (not direct sunlight) and this should make it keep its Golden colour! x

Water, clean water with a drop of ick solution in a small bowl. Gold fish is very easy to take care of. Also, it's the cheapest way to have yourself a pet. However, it loves clean water and food. Clean its bowl every two days by dump the water out and re-fill the bowl.

do you have it somewhere too light? Daylight can cause the scale colour to fade.Try moving it somewhere a little darker, they are very sensitive to bright light.
