Does anyone have experience using Seagate or Western Digital internal hard drives? Looking to install another HDD on my desktop and was hoping to draw on other end users experiences. Thank you in advance.

What you need is Ghostbusters, oops, sorry. What you need is to go to pcworld.com. There they have the recommendations and tests, and prices so you can make your decision.

They are both very good drives. The Seagate may run a little louder then the WD drive (but only if you purchase a perpendicular drive). As far as the other suggestions about buying a Maxtor, they are a division of Seagate as they were bought out last year. Seagate drives also have the longest warranty's in the industry, 5 years versus between 1 and 3 with the other manufacturer's.

First of all all drive manufactures make cheap and premium drives so it is always best to do a little research on-line on sites like tomshardware.com and the like. I've had Maxtor(now part of Seagate),IBM,Samsung,CompUSA(made by Maxtor) as well as Western Digital and Seagate. Between WD and Seagate the WD drives I still have to this day (2 of them bought in 2001&2002) , but lost 1 of my 2 Seagate drives(the lost 1 bought in 1998 and the operational one bought in 2000). I download a lot of crap so the drives get a workout and the pc stays on all day. I actually recomend the Samsung drives because they are inexpensive and are of decent quality.

I am personally partial to Seagate or Maxtor, but the question is really more like, "Which is better, Ford or Chevy?" Regardless of what hard drive you choose, someone will think you are wrong. I have always stuck by the rule of more bang for the buck.

In other words, find the best deal and go for it. I usually go shopping here for good deals on computer hardware:

Seagates from my personal experience tend to be the most durable and reliable hard drives out there. I have never had an issue with them, nor a failure. I've switched numerous PC drives as well as use them for my Laptop's 2.5" harddrive and for my external hard drives (3 and counting). I would recommend Maxtor as my second choice even before they were bought out by Seagate. Maxtor's were actually from all my surveys and readings were up there in terms of reliability like Seagate. Some places had them as better than Seagate and vice versa.

Western Digital have become better in recent years, but I've had 2 in my experiences fail on me and in tests from magazines and web sites I've seen them come in second to Seagate plenty of times in terms of reliability. Thye due tend be cheaper compared to Seagate which charges a bit of a premium, but again i have yet to have one of them fail on me so you get your moneys worth.

Seagate and Western Digital are both very good brands. Get the most capacity for the least bucks, and enjoy!

There's also maxtor.

I've used 3 maxtor drives for 5, 3, and 1 years each without any problems.

Really, all three brands are about the same. I would look at features, price, and warranty.

I have not heard anything bad about either one so I would say which ever has the best price for the features and size
