What can a counselor do that a close friend cannot?

Tell you the truth. Often a friend will offer an opinion and give advice based on what you want to hear and not what you should hear. Friends don't want to hurt your feelings.

Depends what it is for. If only need reassurance and sympathy then a friend is the best counselor. If you want to have a professional opinion on something then a counselor is probably the best. (unless your friend is a counselor)

A counsellor would probably know what questions to ask to help you resolve our issue. Also they are not biased ad give a different perspective on that that maybe a friend wouldn't tell you.

That said friends are great to talk to about problems. Especially if it is something on going - you always have access to talk to them and they can give you a hug or whatever to cheer you up and take you out shopping or whatever floats your boat.

Both are very good in different ways. Also it depends on the problem. If it is something a bit deep probably counsellor is better.

Is a friend the best counselor?

That's a good point hon, Im not too sure. A friend you trust is better, they may not have the degree or whatever, but they'll always be there for you for free! Though, come to think about it, a counsellor provides a point of view from 'the outside'.

Depends on which friend. Counsellors are trained to be impartial, ask the right questions, etc. Friends might judge you, not really be interested in digging deep, be too inexperienced to help, gossip to others.

If you can find a wise friend who really wants to help you, and who you could open up to, you're lucky. Presumably people who go to counsellors don't have such a friend.

Yes and no.Yes they can give advice but it`s up to you if you choose to follow what they say.And no trained counsellors are objective and see from an outside point of view they also have options open to you that maybe a close friend did not know about.this friend would have to be very close, trustworthy and have some knowledge of being a counsellor.I hope this has helped you in some way.......good luck.

Councillors look at you objectively, which is better for giving advice.
But there's nothing wrong with seeking advice from a friend, but don't expect too much. Friends are good listeners usually. Unless they're a crack addict, like someone I knew, who's sole advice for any problem was 'have some crack'.

A counsellor can sometimes be better than a friend as they can give you a point of view that maybe a good friend may not wish too. But a good friend knows the true you

Not always no as most people have their own agenda (whether they realise or not). A proper counsellor is the best way to go, they can't be influenced by any of their relationships with the people involved in your problem.
