I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and the fact is that we DON'T usually kill the baby if it is a girl. In China's major cities no one is doing it anymore. But in some more remote places this still happends but things are getting better now.

with the one child policy families better get a son, if they want their name to continue in the next generations... in the old days, and in rare cases still today, if a girl is to be born she will be drowned, or sent to an orphanage... however nowadays, with china's progress... the one child policy doesnt really exist anymore... and not everyone has the heart to kill their new born...
even back in the old days... when the one child policy was strong, it was only really effective in the city, if you were from the rural areas.. it would be more likely that u had 5 or more children... because out of five children only 2 would probably make it to the age of ten years old.
