It was once believed that at the occurance of a particularly common event that one's soul was expelled, and that at the moment a demon could enter and take control of the body.

Utter rubbish ! Sneezing followed by a " bless you", derives from the European period of the bubonic plague. The early symptoms were sneezing , accompanied by ring of red rashes, followed by falling down, and death. Carrying flowers with perfume(posies) was believed to prevent infection. Or as they said at the time , and the children mimicked in rhyme, "A ring, a ring of Roses,a pocket full of posies, a-tishoo,a-tishoo, we all fall down". Not Demons - the Black Death!
