DVD-rom means read only, you would need a DVD-writer to burn any type of DVD.

1. Are you trying to burn + data on a - disc. Can not do this. That is like trying to put WMA files in you MP3 player. DIfferent format.
2. I assume you mean DVD drive. Some DVD drives are ROM in that they will play DVDs only and not read them. Just like you can buy VCRs(I think they are called VCP) that will only play VCR but not record VCR tapes. You would need a DVD drive that will burn. Then have you tried a new disc. The one you tried on may be full.
3. Time to get another drive. Like us, some drives will die sooner than others. Sanyo sells a 18x DVD with ram for about $43 on the internet. About 60% less than the store. My drive had the same problem, and it would not even read. So I bought another better one and now no problemo.
4. Now if your drive can burn a + disc and not a - disc, then time for another drive. You have to take it like a man, that things wear out and break down
5. Big explanation, cuz I have nothing better else to do and to explain that DVD drives can just play DVDs, or play and burn DVDs.

Some drives are picky about the disc. Try a different brand of media and perhaps update the firmware of your recorder. I once had a drive that would not burn dvd + r or -r discs. I had to use rw's which became expensive after a while.
I have had good luck with Memorex media.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I believe that some computers have a DVD player only while some come with a DVD player/burner...you'll probably want to check the specs of the computer.
