The max. speed of the SR71 is not Mach 3.

Never heard of it and since the SR-71 doesn't do much more than mach 3, the majority of the shuttle heating would have been well over with by the time it slowed to that speed. Plus the 71 is much smaller than the shuttle and could never shield it. I doubt that it's true.

With satelite technology, I dont think they fly the Blackbird anymore if at all. I can only agree with the answers above, speed...though fast the shuttle only comes to normal flight speed on final approach long after its rentry...if the blackbird was used as a heat shield, what saved the sr-71 from being burnt if it was used? It has to heat shield and therefore would have been a suicide mission.

Sorry, bud -- I *watched* the first shuttle landing in person in the desert in California. I had my telescope, and followed the shuttle's descent from the moment it was visible until it landed.
No SR-71. Really.

I haven't heard that, but it makes sense! Use one heat shield to save another heat shield.

This sounds dangerous though! Wouldn't they end up hitting each other?
