1/2 + 1/3 + x = 1 party. Multiply both sides by 6.

3 + 2 + 6x = 6 or
6x + 5 = 6 or
6x = 1 or
x = 1/6

Now, convert to a percentage.

1/6 = .1667 (rounded). Multiply by 100 and we get

16.67%

people original = P
1/2 people left are employees = 1/2*P
1/3 of those employees are spouses = 1/3*1/2*P = 1/6P

so left = P - 1/2*P - 1/6*P = 1/3*P

% left = 1/3P / P = 1/3 = 33.3%

take an example: say 12 people at party originally
1/2 are employees or 6
and 1/3 of those are spouses = 1/3* 6 = 2

so 12 - 6 - 2 = 4 left = 4/12 = 1/3 = 33% as expected

NOTE: this question is confusing - i assume they are asking for the percentage of people that are left at the party beside the employees and the spouses - if that is the question then my answer is correct

The question is ambiguous - does "their spouses" mean the spouses of the employees or the people at the party? if former then my answer is right and if latter then I agree with the others that get 1/6

people are making this more difficult than it is.
get a common denominator for 1/2 and 1/3
3/6 + 2/6 =5/6 therefore 1-5/6 =1/6
