Guinea pigs are great pets and there just the right size for kids not to big but not to small like gerbils. my 4 yr old nephew has a guinea pig and he loves it AND he takes care of it!! he really does he helps clean the cage and takes his out and plays with him gently! Rats are good pets too. i have 2 young girl rats right now and they are sweet as sweet can be!
but please do you research before you get any pet!

rabbits as well can be 'smelly'. Guinea pigs are great, and do not require the same care as a rabbit. Call a local shelter or rescue in your area, they will be able to help you more than anyone. Even a vet's office could make a good recomendation. I agree with above, a guinea pig is great, especially with a two year old. ( I am ashamed to admit that when I was two I killed a bunny because when I looked at it I squealed with delight and it fell over dead from a heart attack) This is common with rabbits. Rabbits are also not good pets to keep in the cage all the time. Another good suggestion is an adopted rat. Before you gross yourself out, they are brilliant, loving and easier to care for than a rabbit. My rat used to walk beside me (like a pooch) when I would walk through the woods to my grandmas. He came when I called him if we were outside. Now, not all rats are like this, but this is just an example to show you how smart and loyal they can be! Good luck!

A 2 yr old and a rabbit are NOT a good mix and they can be smelly too. If you want an animal that says in the cage "most the time" consider getting a stuffed animal and put in in a cage. No smell and you can still pet it now and then.

Don't get a rabbit if you want to keep it in the cage all the time. They like to exercise! They are also pretty messy and if you dont clean the cage daily, they will smell as well. I don't think a pet is a good option for you. Animals are a big responsibility and you do not sound like you really want any responsibility.

There are dwarf rabbits, but even the dwarf ones need access to a fair amount of space, so I don't think they would be suitable for a flat. You could keep guinea pigs - a pair of females will live happily together, and your 2-year-old will love them. They're quite endearing little creatures although they don't do a lot.
Have a look at this to see if you have the space needed:

you may think im crazy but rats are the like one of the nicest rodents youll ever meet. im 13 years old and i have 2 they never bite like mice and hamsters.(my mom has only gotten biten once and that is because she had food on her finger.)you could be the really shallow type who wont even consider this or you could be open to anything, and be really nice. rats are very social, they want to be with you. they are very smart(i taught mine come, stay, and up.)girl rats hardly smell at all(guys mark everything so it gets a little stinky) they really are great pets!!!
rabbits are nice too, i had one but they chew up everything you have to hide all the wires in your house. well hope it helps
plus youll be saving a life from snake.
also rats dont need too much of your time. but you do need to take care of it just like any other animal.

Rabbits are also very messy and smelly. Plus the freaken chew anything they can get their buck teeth on- still find stuff with rabbit holes in it from BooBoo the bunny (passed on 5 years ago). Believe it or not, if you want a small and very clean pet- A RAT is your best bet. I kid you not, rats are clean and very smart. My sister use to have one and she was great. She would come to a kissing sound- rats can be trained to come to certain sounds. She was soo clean and smart. Also you can get them in different colors my sister was brown with blue eyes if you don't like lab rats.

I had a rabbit as a child and it used to bite a lot. And it stunk so bad. It also attracted mice to the house, so we had to get rid of it.
Hamsters and gerbils are nice as long as you keep their cages clean. I used to have a hamster, and I put empty paper towel rolls into his cage, and he would go to the bathroom in there. I would just replace that like every other day. He was so easy to clean up after.

two year olds and pets do not mix but it is a good way to see if they have allergys because if they do eyes will run and sneezes will start from the hair or fur. Personally I cannot imagine a child not having a big goldfish at least once in their life time let them do the feeding with your help of course clean the bowl when ever it needs it and then you are done, two year olds do not like to clean you will have to do it
