The value of kindness? well u have to evaluate it yourself. ask yourself "What good did I do?" "What made that lady beat me?" "did I do something wrong?" and apologize if possible. Then and then only will you know the true meaning of it. It is only to be discovered, not to be told....

Kindness is priceless. There's a saying though "No good deed goes unpunished." Sometimes we do something nice for someone & instead of getting thanked, we get scolded or worse. Don't let that stop you from doing good deeds! If someone can't take a compliment, a helping hand, a friendly gesture, then it's their problem, not yours! Many people have become so cynical & distrustful that they don't expect kindness from strangers & may actually misinterpret it & think you're up to no good.
Trust the law of karma. What you put out you will get back. Be kind to others & the universe will be kind to you. All our good deeds will be rewarded at some point, in some way, even if we have to wait until the afterlife!

I have no disagreement at all with what amp has said.... she is absolutely right.
However, I do see the other side as well. In this ungrateful and selfish world, kindness is indeed either misinterpreted or at least ignored. Therefore, the question does arise whether the kindness is deserved or not.... and that is why 'Karma' ( forget jargon... just read 'as you sow, so you reap') is making sure that kindness is ever becoming the rarest of deeds one can encounter in the modern world of human machines. God save our souls!!

It will be returned to you in some way along the road of life. Even if the recipient of your act of kindness didn't appreciate it.

See, though you may have not been given the full reward which you might have expected. But if you retrospect, did you do deed full heatedly? If yes how did you feel after you did help her? Wasn't the feeling pleasant? Is not that enough?

I once saw a short documentary where this guy went around holding a sign offering free hugs. He got a huge response. It was pretty cool.

Kindness is social glue, at the very least. Imagine if nobody valued kindness.
