about making a will, or bloody finance. I have just had to put the phone down on some persistent bloody woman, who is harping on about me making savings on my mortgage. I told her, i am NOT interested, very happy with my lender thankyou, but she acted like i was obliged to listen to her! Bloody cheek, i put the phone down, i am not usually an ignorant person, but she made me see red with her attitude. How do you deal with these unwanted calls? I think they have a cheek, ringing your home, forcing themselves on you.

Look up the TPS -telephone preference service- on line. they Will stop unwanted calls if you register with them. There is also a FPS - fax preference service and MPS- mail preference service. They are good at what they do and are free. Other companies offer this service but charge.

If you are in the UK look in the back of the phone book under nuisance calls. There is a system called Telephone Preference Service and if you register with them (you only need to ring the number and leave your details - it's free) and within a few days these calls will stop. Anyone that does get through you just say "Why are you calling, I've got TPS" and they can't get off the phone quick enough. HTH!

If you look in your BT phone book under preferences there is a number you can ring to get these blocked. It should stop all but a few and you are entitled to get the name and number of the caller to make an official complaint if they persist after that. The only exception is callers from abroad.
If this woman rings again, even before you have screening in place, get a number you can ring back, and threaten to complain to BT about her and her companies tactics. Cold callers are supposed to follow a code of conduct.
Hope this helps

Register for a stop on junk phone calls - I used one a long time ago (not the BT one, but can't remember who it was via, possibly TPS) and it has really worked, I get no marketing calls at all any more.

Here are some useful sites:
http://www.callpreventionregistry.co.uk/
http://www.optoutuk.co.uk/
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Occasionally my bank cold calls on offers, but I just politely tell them I'm not interested.

Don't feel like you are ignorant if they make you cross - they are uninvited, persistent and often rude themselves - say "I'm not interested thanks" once and just put the phone down, you are under no obligation whatsoever to listen to them trying to put the hard sell on you.

Hello,

(ANS) I used to work in Market Research (aweful job!!) we used to dail hundreds of numbers each shift and yes! we got lots of rude and abusive people.

So I'm talking here from past experience, if your fed up with such phone calls get yourself an answering machine and leave the machine permanently switched on, that way you can filter the sales calls from the legit calls (from friends & family).

The company making such commercial calls will soon stop calling you knowing all they will get is an answering machine, we were never permitted to leave answering machine messages and even if they did you can just wipe them anyway.

**Finally you could regsiter with the telephone prefence service, they have a website and its simple & quick to register and it will help to eliminate some cold calling companies. Run a quick Yahoo or google.com search on key words "telephone preference" service should get you all the details required.

You can log your telephone number with the Phone Preference Service. This stops all unwanted calls from these type of companies to your home phone. It takes about 28 days once you have logged your number but it really does work.

You can ring a BT number that removes your name from the lists those companies hold about people. Try ringing BT and ask them about it. I used to be plagued everyday by them. Since calling BT. I only receive the occasional call that gets through.

- join the TPS, as other people have said.
- get your number unlisted - if it's in the phone directory, you're a target for any company wanting to cold-call people.
- say "I'm sorry, I bought one last week, after researching all the other options including your company. Thank you for your call", and put the phone down.

Check with BT there is a free system call OST, it takes 12 days to activate and after that you will get next to no calls of that nature
