Absolutely. I think that there is a subset of the population in which it can cause significant problems. For example, adolescents and 20 somethings who follow pop culture feel tremendous pressure to be thin thus increasing the incidence of eating disorders in these girls. There is also a new phenomena that has arisen over the past 10-15 or so years that focuses on how much money and how many material "things" you posses. This can cause many problems - I see this alot in individuals in prison who are so focused on becoming rich that they do all sorts of illegal things.
However, the vast majority of Americans are not necessarily influenced by their self-image. You just don't hear about these people.

Overtly? As opposed to "covertly?" I think you mean "overly" and if you do, it would have to be in comparison to something or someone. At any rate, I don't think one can or should try to generalize such things about the population of an entire country.

In response to your additional comment, I would say then that, yes, American MEDIA are overtly obsessed with body image, but that is not to say the average American is.

I think that americans are overtly obsessed. we all see the super-models and acters and singers and we think we have to look like them such as weight, how tan we are or whatever. no one can just be happy with themselves anymore. everyone thinks that we have to weigh 105 and no more than 110, me personally i weigh 135 and i look darn good and never try to be like anyone famous cause sooner or later they are going to lose that image.

Yes

I'm not sure about the limitation you placed . . . overtly

Humans are mirrors - they reflect what they are looking toward

If they are looking at themselves, just like a mirror looking at itself, it becomes a deep reflecting 'hole' leading nowhere and empty.

But if you choose to look at, God, for example . . . well, need I explain?
