what are possible explanations he/she will give me.Dont have time for background check as position must be filled.

I'm set to take a year and a half tour through Asia (been planning for over 3 years) starting next spring

A background check might be worth the wait because they could have been convicted of a crime, or could have worked a job during those 3 years that they are not telling you about because they were fired for any number of reasons. Beyond that, though, they could have taken time off because of family or personal reasons, could have parented or adopted a new child, or could have had some sort of inheritance or sum of money saved up and just took a break.

I have a nieghbour in this situation.. When he left his last job 3 years ago he had enough money to take a break, now he is broke and needs a job again.. Should make sure the last address was not the prison though.

Surely you have time to verify references or ask who can verify his unemployment of 3 years. Ask for his last 3 years income tax returns or something. Time and urgency are never good excuses for sloppy management.

Hire the person...Three months, then OUT if they don't work out.
There are many reasons (other than prison) that a person may be out of commission
