Belt slipping most likely. My advise is - get another mechanic. Any mechanic who can't figure something out this simple would not be working on my car for sure. The problem is today, a lot of so-called mechanics only put the new cars on a diagnostic. Older cars should be dealt with by a highly reputable garage (usually one with "older" - 50s or so- mechanics. Good luck.

Have you changed the fluid and filter?

And still have the noise. I can only recommend a good automatic transmission shop to pull it apart and rebuild it. Could be a sticking valve body or belt slipping.
