My husband and I share a tiny rectangular closet. One short wall and one longer wall have a pole each for hanging clothes. Besides that , it only has two built-in shelves above each pole. We are running out of space, even with the use of dressers. Any creative suggestions or know of any organization gadgets that we must have.

Try using a double rod for short things like shirts, & pants. You can use under bed storage containers for out of season clothing. You can go through each item and see if you really want to keep it, how long have you had it, do you use or wear it? You can also use the storage bags that you can suck out the air with a vaccum. You could hang some things on the back of a door. You could hang robe's on a nice hook. Some things might make a nice display on the wall, like purses & jewelry. I bought a closet that you put together at Home Depot that holds a lot, and inexpensive. Some things if folded certain ways stack better and take up less space. I lived in a studio apt. and every inch counted.

My wife and I had this same problem until we finally knocked a wall out and more than doubled the size of the closet. Assuming that is not an option, what we did before that that helped was get the exact measurements of the closet and took them to the Container Store. This is not exactly cheap, but they will put your measurements into a computer and get a cool 3-d model to play with - then design the most efficient use of shelving for you, using their Elfa shelf products. They have 2 big Elfa sales a year if you can wait... though they might be in the tail of one right now.

consider making one of the walls a double row for shirts and skirts etc. and leave the other one for full length items. you probably have more short items than long so make the long wall double row and you'll almost double your capacity. we had a major mishap in our closet, (thanks to my father in laws' easy way fix), that resulted in a big hole in the ceiling. the closet was 5 1/2' wide by 5' deep but only 5' tall at the back. i took everything out and after replacing the ceiling put in new poles front to back instead of side to side. we ended up with 3' more pole space, a sweater tower and a shoe tower too. plus i put in a shelve off of the floor to double the shoe storage there, too. i added a shelf above both poles and a second on one side above the other for all of her pocketbooks. while the ceiling was out i installed an outlet and put in a fluorescent light for her, too. it's an old house and there still isn't enough closet space, but this was a big step forward. my point is, ignore how it's set up now and think how to build it if it was a blank slate. good luck!

There is a company called California Closets that can design anything for a closet. My husband and I had the same problem in our first house. I raised one of the poles so I could add another pole below it. That way I had double the space for skirts, shirts, and pants. Keep one pole at a height for dresses.

At Home Depot, you will find closet organizer systems that you can install yourself. Make a diagram of the closet with all dimensions, then go shopping.
Have you thought about sorting through your stuff and getting rid of what you don't need?
