if you like adventure stories with loads of action, try anything by Wilbur Smith. He writes about Africa mostly. The Diamond Hunters is a good place to start. here's the first paragraph:
His flight had been delayed for three hours at Nairobi, and despite four large whiskies he slept only fitfully until the intercontinental Boeing touched down at Heathrow. Johnny Lance felt as though someone had thrown a handful of grit in each eye, and his mood turned ugly as he came through the indignity of Customs and Immigration into the main hall of the international terminus.
and, the last:
Tracey's face was framed in the cabin window of the helicopter. He saw her lips form his name before he fainted.
that ought to get you going!

The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour. Not a western but into Constanstinople and Middle Eastern thought and intrigue.
At the center of The Walking Drum is Kerbouchard, one of L'Amour's greatest heroes. Warrior, lover, scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger and revenge. Across the Europe, the Russian steppes and through the Byzantine wonder of Constantinople, gateway to Asia, Kerbouchard is thrust into the heart of the treacheries, passions, violence and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time.

As already mentioned, "Angels & Demons" and "The DaVinci Code" (both by Dan Brown) are excellent books filled with action. Anything by Stephen King will be filled with action as well; my recommendations are "Pet Semetary" and "The Stand." John Grisham and Tom Clancy are two other authors who also write good, action-packed novels. Good luck with your search!

Besides the obvious "Angels and Demons", I'd suggest any book by James Patterson.

Depends what you enjoy, but I liked Patricia Cornwell. She wrote the Kay Scarpetta series (Body Farm) or for real life interesting research on the soul, the use of cadavers, look up Mary Roach (Spook, Stiff). Enjoy!
