For over 20 years (since I really cared after leaving school) I've read very little positive comment about the British PM (Thatcher, Major, Blair). That's two different partys leaders who have been subjected to differing degrees of accusations of ineptitude, inadequacy, fascism etc. etc.

I hear the same on sites like this from the Yanks (and also from the Brits who feel they know enough) about their leaders.

So how are they in power?

Its like this. In UK, us Brits build our heros up and then tear them down again.

Take Winston Churchill - we got an election in 1945 and what did we do? Why we kicked him out. Reason; we wanted a Welfare State and knew that Winston would not give it to us.

It's the same with other leaders. Maggie Thatcher kicked **** and one day she did it too hard and her own party stabbed her in the back.

The rest is history.

I'm in Canada and probably the last PM here I respected was the late Lester Pearson, who won the Nobel peace prize. I have some respect for the late PM Pierre Trudeau. However since the 80s onward politics has become nasty and partisan and more about what policies the political parties want and less what the voter wants. Character and vision seems to have gone out the window. It's how long can I stay, how big will my pay cheque be and what can I get with the golden handshake and nothing about giving a patoot about the people who elect and their lot. As long as I got mine Jack, screw you.

I cannot stand Blair, although my sympathies are Labour (old, not new). Thatcher is obviously a no-no for me, Major was useless, Callaghan was hamstrung by various conflicting interests and I was too young to give Wilson a fair appraisal.

In a review of the impacts made by the various leaders, Clement Attlee got the highest place. His short tenure really made a big difference to the UK. The NHS, for one, was introduced by his government.

Jim Callaghan was Prime Minister at an impossible time, and he made a desperate mistake over the Winter Of Discontent (which is why he lost the only election he ever fought as PM), but he was fundamentally a decent man and his heart was with the people.

Most people respect Churchills record as a leader - he took us through our darkest and most difficult years.

Thatcher was Satan in disguise. How can anyone respect a person who tore the heart out of the country and left us morally bankrupt? We are still paying the social price of Thatcherism - just trace all the current social problems backwards and they land right at her door.

I'm having a party when she pops off joined by a couple of million others.

Michael Collins, I'm Irish and if Dev had died in the emergency instead of Collins we'd have a united country by now.
