Those strips are actually air filled hoses that trigger a counter every time a car drives over it. The car running over the hose causes the air pressure to increase and thus the counter detects the car. They set it up with two strips so that they can monitor both sides of the street.

The strips are air filled ,and when a tyre go,s over the strip the air pressure trips a counter in the box at the side of the road ,when the box as been there for a set time ,there are calculated to tell the co uncle the volume of traffic using the road
They are not at all to do with speed

The tubes are filled with a liquid of some discript which when a car drives over it is forced into the box by the side of the road. Inside the box is some equipment to measure pressure. This records the speed and volume of traffic.

Obviously, the strip counts the number of times that cars go over it. The machine is calibrated to figure two 'bumps' for each car.

As for speed, the machine can also be calibrated to figure the speed of a car by the amount of time lapsed between the first and 2nd 'bump'.

there is two so they can see how fast the cars are going, they also count how many cars pass over a street in a given period of time

it counts the amount of tyres that go over it, and they measure the speed they travel by counting how longit takes for the tyre to go over the first one and reach the second one
