It worries me that this is a view held by so many people. Firstly in the north of England there are not enough manual labour jobs to go around and the majority of the workforce is only at that skill level since the closure of the mines and steel works etc. Skilled jobs appear to be plentiful but not low skilled jobs that are needed.

I have worked since I left university with a Batchelors Degree. I have been made redundant twice and now run my own business. I am a single parent and could not afford to pay the £150pw childcare and work at the same time, nor would I want to never see my child. I'm a mother first and foremost and will not let someone else bring up my child it is my responsibility. I have paid NI since I was 18 and will do so again once th business is making a profit. I am building a new business in it's first year which will hopefully in the future provide many jobs and income for the UK. The government allows me to claim benefits to live on until this happens or I decided it is not going to work. You do not get benefit to PAY YOUR MORTGAGE!!! You only get it for rented accomodation.

National Insurance is just that. Insurance for your life should you ever need assistance with regards to ill health, redundancy, your house burning down and everything you ever worked for being lost... etc. I do not agree that immigrants should be able to claim benefits after being in the country for more than 3 months as they should be able to find work in that time or they should not have been allowed in as they are not needed. However.. that is my personal opinion and many wil disagree.

Other than your own issues with grammar and spelling you couldn't be more correct; however some people can't obtain work in certain industries due to physical limitations; if I lost my job I would have to get state help (I have two small girls that live at home with me) until I obtained another position and that could take more than a few weeks because of the job market where I live and the fact that I don't qualify for warehouse positions due to a back injury I suffered several years ago (most plants have a physical you must pass to be allowed to work); if someone doesn't try they can't succeed so at least I have the fact that I would try every day in every way to find a job and would take a low pay job versus having no job at all; the frustration lazy people cause isn't worth your time, but I do understand where you are coming from.

this is such a judgemental view!
i do agree that sometimes some 'job seekers' have no intention of finding a job and are happy as they are, but seriously how many people want to survive on just £56 a week! and people that lose their job and have a mortgage don't get their 'rent' paid - they then fall into arrears and risk losing their home, or increase borrowing to make payments, but without being able to repay that credit.
i was once trying to survive on state benefits and having my rent paid - this was not my choice, it was following a relationship breakdown where i'd been very well off financially before.
i found myself struggling to manage even the basics with the little money i was getting, and did not get all my rent paid as i lived in a nice area!
of course i desperately wanted to work to try and improve things but there were so many barriers to me working - the main one being working around childcare hours. when i did finally find a suitable job, i was only £24 a week better off and i worked 32 hours, so felt as through i wasn't even getting £1 an hour!
I'm sure there are lots of reasons why people are out of work, or unable to find suitable jobs - so it's not quite so black and white after all.

I am a believer that if you live off of welfare, you should have to earn that welfare (unless, of course, they are seriously unable to work).

I know that in my community, we need public lands cleaned up, there are enough road projects to never run out, prisons need to be cleaned, some old folks need food delivered, or cooked, or homes cleaned. It would be amazing to see just how many people could finally find more suitable work for themselves that paid more than welfare, and was a more desirable position.

If not, we would get a lot of much needed things done around the country without jeopardizing any existing jobs. By the way - why aren't prisoners also earning their own keep?

Quit draining the economy and contribute something useful. Almost everyone can contribute something. I know of a quadriplegic who does telephone and computer work. I know of gentleman who has the mental capacity of a 7 year old that cleans a fast food restaurant full time. I know of a single mother of three young kids who has taken in three neighbor kids for daycare.

Next time you lose your job through no fault of your own, don't even think about claiming benefits! I pay tax and national insurance with the knowledge that if I'm ill, I'll get treated by the doctor or if I lose my job I'll get some form of income. True, that some people take advantage of the system but they are a minority and most of them are women. I'd rather see a not-so-clever woman looking after her own children than doing some meaningless job on the checkout till whilst somebody else is bringing up her kids.

Suck my c*ck. You are nothing but an ignorant bigot. Most unemployed want a job very badly, are fed up to the back teeth of going cap in hand to the DSS once a fortnight for starvation wages and bitterly resent dim Star readers like you telling them they are all workshy and feckless. You should stick to drinking White Lightning and slapping the wife around.

i'm bloody detest to assert it mate, yet I reckon that is gonna be No 4 in case you deceive the letting brokers (who will want to do al sorts of checks on you besides) you should finally end up chucked out of your flat at the same time as they discover out. you are able to also get finished for it...i guess it ought to also be labelled as fraud (not truly confident on that one, yet on the right of the day you're fraudulently getting the flat-in case you ultimately end up getting it) Did that make experience?? lol i does not try it if I were you...wait til you've were given yet another job

This is a bit annoying, why should I pay my taxes just so that someone on the dole gets the money I worked hard for to earn?

It's not right and should be stopped!

If you're talking about those able-bodied, lazy, bone idle people who never work and have no intention of working I agree with you.
As for people who are temporarily unemployed for no fault of their own of course we should help them, it could and probably will happen to most of us at some time.
