If all you do is run then you are building up only one set of muscles and this can lead to shin splints. Try riding a bicycle and swimming to go along with your running routine. Remember to stretch before your workouts and allow ample time for your muscles to recover. That's the beauty of the other exercises in that not only are you building up all the muscles in the leg but you are not taxing just one set.

You have to strengthen the shin area. Do exercises like drawing the alphabet with your toes, picking small objects up with your toes. Once the area is strengthened, you'll have fewer problems.
The best solution is to allow your shins to completely heal. Stop running until they stop hurting, and wear shoes with lots of padding so that you aren't shocking your shins with every step.
Best wishes...

no no no no no!!!!! Stretch AFTER you run, NOT BEFORE. Stretching before you run just adds stress to cold muscles and ligaments. Warm up your muscles slowly by walking briskly for 10 or minutes prior to running, do your run, THEN stretch.
