During reinstallation, you have a choice between reinstalling, or FORMAT then reinstall. Read the directions and options carefully.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

No. Without Formatting a drive, you only reinstall the OS, and do nothing about the possiblity of viruses left on the hard drive.

Best to FDISK and delete the partition,
Fdisk again and re-create the partion,
Format
Reinstall.

Note: When you format a drive, you are merely getting rid of the files which are on the drive, but not destroying it completely. You are just making it possible to reinstall everything. This is important to know. Any program which you downloaded to the hard drive will ALSO be gone and will need to be re-downloaded and re-installed. Before you go about formatting, make a list of programs which you will need. If you still have the install programs on the hard drive, burn them to CD or copy to a floppy so that you can reinstall them easier afterward.

PS: To completely destroy a drive, use a program such as Killdisk, which will write to every sector of a drive.

When you format a hard drive nothing is left on it, reinstalling leaves you with a clean installation. Which will probably get dirty soon ;)

It just reinstalls the operating system to original. If you are having problems and don't mind loosing your files, format away.

No, its not.

Re-formatting a partition on a disk drive is "wiping it clean" again - ready to be used by a computer operating system.

You do not have to re-format to re-install an operating system (but it is usually best to do so).
