Figure out what time period you like to read about and then look at different series that fit that:
The Marcus Dido mysteries are set in ancient Rome.
Sherlock Holmes is set in the late 1800's, early 1900's.
Nero Wolfe stories take place mostly in the 1940's but through the 60's.
On (day), the Rabi (did whatever) is set in the 1960's.
The NUMA series by Clive Cussler is set in 1990's, 2000.

If you want a really good suspense thriller book, read one of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books. Start with "Killing Floor". Its got mystery, murder, suspense, everything. The hero is this ex military man and is so creatively violent, and the writing is so crisp it snaps! I started reading it in the bathtub and got so caught up I ended up in the bath for like four hours! Give it a try
