I was interested in the number of births ,on average, in the USA on January 17th

Birth rate approx. 4.2 million per annum, divide by 365, comes to 11,500 births that day, give or take 200.

You'll need to be more specific here. Do you mean the number of births on that date in the entire world, in a specific country, in some hospital--what?

You can get an estimate by taking the total number of births in a year for wherever it is you're wanting information and dividing by 365 (or 365.25 to include leap year). However, births are usually slightly higher in the fall months and slightly lower in winter, so it may not be entirely accurate.
