Like someone else mentioned, be prepared to have the turtle for a long time. They are messy, and their water, if aquatic, must be cleaned frequently.
I've only owned aquatic turtles, and I would recommend a Painted Turtle (if you're in the USA) because they're common at pet stores and don't get very large. Those Red-Eared Sliders can get HUGE!
I'm attaching Wikipedia articles for Painted Turtles and Red-Eared Sliders (two most common aquatic breeds at pet stores).

There are a number of turtles that make pets.
The ones at your local pet store can be a variety types. The box turtle is very common.
They need to be kept at a warm temperature if they get too cold they can hibernate. There are commercial turtle foods available. They generally eat some plants and insects, most enjoy earthworms. Each turtle will have its preference for food. They need water to drink and crawl in and out of. If it is warm outside they need a place to sun themselves and shade to cool off. To get specific information about the turtle you want, spend some time with the search engines like goggle or ask.com.
I hope this helps a little.

Turtles are reptiles, belonging to the order Testudines, which also includes tortoises. In general, turtles are aquatic or semi-aquatic, while tortoises are terrestrial.
As pets, take to account where you live, some species are protected and cannot be kept as pets. Also take to account the species, some turtles, such as the common snapping turtle, get quite large and are capable of causing severe injuries when adults. Red ear sliders are commonly sold as pets, and too not get very large. There are websites dedicated to turtle care as pets.

One of the best best general pet turtle research sites on-line is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com
They have care sheets, good articles (including one on choosing your first turtle), and a good turtle forum that can answer a lot of your questions.

I don't know much about looking after a turtle but I do know this - my friend has one and it is like 20 years old. They never die so be prepared to be in it for the long haul.
