Misdemeanors mean that you could serve up to one year in a local jail (or regional jail) but very seldom does anyone get sentenced to that because it would cost the community too much to keep the person for a year. But if this person has a prior arrest record they may be the person that a judge will sentence to maximum jail time since probation has not worked in the past. In some states the third or more offense of a misdemeanor becomes a felony which means prison time, like 1-3 years. The best thing to do to avoid this not steal because stealing is wrong and sometimes people forget that stealing is wrong. Getting a job and buying things is a good, stealing is bad, OKaaay!
