I don't know that fish get depressed in the same manner that we humans do.

However when fish get lethargic it is typically due to one of two things. Either the water quality isn't good enough (temp off, high nitrates, high nitrites, high ammonia, low oyxgen), or they are sick.

Often times one of the first indicators of a sick fish is that they stop swimming as much and just hang out in one area, or hide a lot.

Fish get depressed by not having tank mates or being moved around alot. They might also be sick. You should look on the Internet for fish diseases and see if your fish has one. My Black moor was moved from his breeder to a store to my tank out of my tank to be cleaned and back in the tank all in the time of three days so it became very stressed and i am currently treating it for ick.

My betta fish seems like he gets depressed now and then. If I clean his bowl, he seems happier. If I give a mirror to "fight" with, he gets happier - so I would say environmental and social issues.
