good point. immigrants will work for peanuts thats why. like the goverment really give a **** about us british! all they interesting in is bleeding as much money out of us as they can,
and never mind putting the age up up 18, they wanna let the teachers force some punishment to the kids these dyas the teachers have no control over the teenagers at the best times.

I have not noticed any popular demand for this policy.
Society and the economy are so complicated today that people need all the education and training they can get to have a successful life and career. But this depends upon the availablity of decent jobs. New Labour has more or less completed Thatcher's destruction of British manufacturing industry - about a quarter of jobs in private industry have gone since 1997. Shouldn't Labour create decent job opportunities before they force people into education? Look at the medical and nursing students who can't get jobs once they have qualified.
Where are the additional teachers coming from them? And how will they make 16 - 18 year olds go to school or college? The prisons are full already.
I am inclined to agree with you about the unemployment statistics. Why else do they let so many students do useless but cheap courses?
New Labour should ask what education and training people want to do because it will benefit them. Not plan to wield yet another bureaucratic stick.

ard as nails has a good point. There are eastern Europeans coming over here, getting half the hourly rate of these un-educated slackers that we're now defending and blowing them away with there hard work and dedication.
We're rearing alot of lazy kids these days who seem to struggle with the concept of making their own way in the world, and have no idea of putting in a decent shift (I add that not all are like this, but too many are).
However, I don't think that it's to massage the unemployment figures, I think it just seems that schools can't teach kids the fundamentals these days before they leave school at 16. Regardless of what qualifications are held (it seems pretty difficult to fail a GCSE), my experience is that school leavers AND even graduates have appauling grammar, spelling and penmanship and struggle with very basic mathematics.
I think the government should try and get these basic skills out of the way before they leave at 16 instead of dragging things on another 2 years with, probably, no intellectual improvement to the workforce whatsoever.

Immigration is not the issue here. And believe me the jobs immigrants are doing are not the ones your average 16 year old would want to do. We do have a skills shortage in this country. Try calling a plumber at 3 in the morning then you will know.
As a mother of 3,1 of 15 she wants to be a doctor so she will not be leaving school at 16. But it seems that only academic qualifications matter in this country now,not vocational ones. i have no problem with a 16 year old learning to become a mechanic or decorator. There's no shame in that. But to force kids who want to work in retail to tell them they have top wait till they are `18 is ridiculous!! Tony is going soon so i think he is just trying to make headlines whilst he can.

Hold your tongue. If it were not for the country allowing immigrants in, then you would not be here with your comment. I think it's great they make it mandatory to finish school. 18 is a good age. How good of a job could you get without a proper education. Let's fix these issues one at a time. The ignorance issue should be dealt with first. How can you fix the problem if you can't understand it. I think they should have made that a law from day one. Thank you and GOD bless.

I totally agree with you
I do think it is a good idea raising the school age but I think it should be with conditions. Either the kids go to college or they have to stay on and get work experience/skills. Where I live there are some parents who haven't done a days work since they left school and their kids will leave school and be the same and just claim money from the social

I agree with you, trouble is the little beggars don't go to school now so trying to keep em there till they are 18 will be amusing.
Also, whilst there is one indigenous person out of work, then no immigration. If they won't work, no benefits. Don't work, don't eat!

We allow immigrants in because the losers who leave school at 16 are incapable of a proper days work.
(sorry if your doing vocational qualifications or what ever they call an apprenticeship these days - I'm NOT including you here)
Everyone who left my school at 16 is still flipping burgers and gobbing in food at McDonalds.
It’s the same everywhere.
For some reason Chav scum think it’s cool to be badly educated.
Stop reading the Daily Mail.
There are plenty of jobs for anyone who wants one.
On www.jobserve.com today there are almost 40,000
