living a life which reduces your own production of pollution that others can see and emulate.
Purchase locally grown food rather than transported food is an enormous reduction in your environmental footprint. mass farming methods, processing, and transportation environmental costs are staggering.
Transport yourself daily. Walk, bicycle, move to where this is possible for you.
Don't buy new computers unless the old one has failed. production of consumer electronics and manufacture of the components are highly toxic.
Don't buy things you don't really need.
purchase green energy to power your home. typically this is a choice or check box on your electric bill that allows the power company to charge you another 1 to 1.5 cents per killowatt hour in return all energy they provide you comes from renewable sources such as wind and hydro.
replace all the incandecent bulbs in your house with florescent or LED. Careful of fixtures which have a dimmer!
use only heating and cooling as truly necessary.
keep the air in all car tires at maximum recommended level as printed on the sidewall. owner's manual will state a lower value for a quieter and smoother ride, but the lower level can burn more gas especially if you don't check regularly. check pressure before driving when the tire air is cold. check at least weekly in the autumn as the temperature drops.
avoid all foods and drinks which contain high fructose corn syrup. avoid corn fed beef. both corn and beef in equate to drinking gallons of petroleum due to corporate poor farming practices. purchase local organically raised beef if you must eat meat.
vote with your dollars, because that is all the corporate world understands. if a company misbehaves, take your money elsewhere even if it is not easy, comfortable, or convienient to do so. boycotts do work.
living green can often be cheaper and heathier than the status quo. when you find something to be proud of, let people know about it. we humans like to copy the latest trends. make it a trend to live without excess and others will follow.
outlaw or tax the SUV gas guzzlers. require special permits for their operation on public highways so that dangerous drivers don't simply buy bigger more dangerous vehicles, but must be specially certified to be able to operate them and show proof of a need to be polluting the environment and risking all other's lives.
A simple law that would have many of these drivers volunteering to give up their toys would be to restrict all SUV and pickup trucks to the right most lane only on multi laned highways. since most of these drivers like to drive fast and pass people, they would gladly buy a smaller, safer, more fuel efficient car if that was the only way it was tolerated.
stop corporate ownership of government. do not elect anyone who has ever held stock or other interests in energy, chemical, or drug companies. due to structuring of mutual funds, this is not feasable at this time but a goal to strive for by enacting laws which would take effect in 10 to 15 years.
immediately make it a crime to appoint cabinet positions for energy policy to anyone who has ever worked for or holds any form of ownership in an energy company. They cannot be allowed to regulate themselves at the expense of the planet.

Voting is a good start. It's important to keep greedy people out of office. They use their position to promote whomever offers them the most for their support. I can think of a certain American President who (in my opinion) is guilty of just that. But that's just my opinion.
To promote a healthy home (earth) we need to be vigilant and not allow big business to do whatever they want. I used to live in Connecticut, and the Naugatuck river was once a beautiful river. But it was polluted by the Brass industry. For a while the river ran lime green, and nothing could live in it. Now, after PEOPLE put pressure on the business the river has been returning to it's original condition. However, the pollution was so bad that sediment in the river still contaminates it. Fish have returned, but no one would want to eat anything from that river.
But People can make a difference by using their Voice and Vote.
Good luck, and my wife and I are with you on this endeavor.
Peace my friend.

Its not easy as an individual but remember you can take a first step and do whatever is in your power as man is by nature destructive. Even animals wonder what has gone wrong with man! Do what you can (practically or advocacy) and hope for the best.

for that just do the little things; save on power, recycle, carpool, pick up trash when walking the beach, etc. it may not have a big impact, but it may satisfy your conscience a bit. then you can always build from there. enjoy your environment as well. to appreciate it you have to use it. then you can continue to progress from there until it becomes a way of life for you. educate others about your findings, but i wouldn't recommend scolding
