You can remove acrylic nails two different ways. You can purchase a professional acrylic nail removal kit at your local drug store, or you can invest a dollar or two in a large bottle of nail polish remover. Make sure you buy a kind that has acetone in it, not one of the gentler nail polish removers on the market these days.
Lay out several pages of newspaper on your kitchen table to prevent spills. Keep several paper towels close by as well to wipe off nail polish, dry your hands off and put the acrylic nails on as they come off.
Clip your nails as short as possible to make the process easier. Next apply some petroleum jelly to your fingers (except the nails) to prevent your skin from drying out completely during the soaking.
Pour the entire bottle of nail polish remover in a bowl. Warm it up in the microwave to make the process faster and easier. Soak your fingernails for about 15 to 20 minutes. The acrylic nails should start to come apart from your natural nail at this point. Gently peel them back a little and soak longer if they still seem pretty attached. Repeat this process until you can easily peel the entire acrylic nail off. Don't force it, or you risk ripping your own nail out of the nail bed, which is very painful.
Wash your hands several times when you're done to get all the acetone off. Use a good hand moisturizer. The acetone dries your skin out. Your nails will look very rough from the acrylic coming off. Use a nail buffer to smooth them out. They'll start looking better after a few days.

Crap that sucks. Don't go back to the salon they can't feel if it hurts when they are trying to get them off. So, I would suggest doing it yourself. At the salon they had me soak in an acetone based polish remover for about 5 minutes. Then they used one of those black emeryboards and filed them off a little at a time. When the emeryboard gets full of dust just smack it on the counter or table to clear it out. File the top surface down till it's thin and soak for awhile longer. Use a cuticule stick to pry up. Also they used a pair of clippers that had a handle shaped like a wish bone and the jaws came to a point like this< The left side being the opening. A little at a time they clipped off the acrylic nail. Alternately filing and clipping till they were gone.

Honestly, the most painless way to get them off, would be to go back to the Salon, and pay for them to remove it.
The other option is to buy a bottle of Acetone, and soak your nails until the acrylic begins to dissolve. Trust me this can take forever, and can be painful to do yourself.

call the hospital and ask if you are allowed just to have the little finger nail removed (they need to check your blood flow etc but only need one nail to do it)
do not pull them off, it will wreck your nails and take months to recover, if you soak them off with acetone your nails underneath will stay intact.
soak them until the nails have turned into jelly (might take 20 minutes) and scrape off with an orange stick, a bit messy to do at home but cheaper than the salon.

Either go to the beauty supply and soak them in the remover they give you, or go back to the nail salon and get them taken off, they know what they are doing, and it is less painful then doing it yourself trust me.

you need to soak your nails in pure acetone
you can buy a tub specially for acrylic nail remover at your local shop or chemist
you need to leave your fingers in the solution for 5 mins and when your removing them, the tub has these bristles which will slowly remove them
sorry i cant recall the name but its pure acetone

I would soak your nails in nail polish remover for a while, that should soften them up quite a bit.

I suggest going back to where you got them put on.
It won't be pretty, however it won't hurt as bad as you trying to get them off yourself.
After surgery go and get them put back on....you will want to trust me.....the site of not having them ...after having them will motivate you.
best wishes
