... and I refused to give in, would I be liable for criminal or civil action if he really ended his own life?

Scenario: My subordinate says, "Don't scold me, otherwise I'll commit suicide." Seeing that he's being stupid, I proceed to yell at him using expletives. Is this a form of encouraging/daring him to kill himself?

Not unless you encouraged the act (daring them) or gave them the means to accomplish the act. Such as the weapon or drugs used. If you tell them it is stupid to do but their choice then no your no responsible

The fact is, taking one's own life is an action taken by that person. It ultimately comes down to their choice to do it and if the law would hold someone else responsible for that, I would fight it. Usually, the majority of people who threaten suicide do it to get attention but don't plan to carry through. If they REALLY want to kill themself, they will do it alone so no one can stop them.

Your understanding is quaint. But you can TAKE ACTION. About 29,000 lives are lost to suicide each year.

Good luck

your not liable to be charge with the crime unless you dared him or said hey sure here's some drug, a gun, or a 20 story building.

No. Its his choice and forcing you to do something this way is blackmailing. So the guy is already doing something wrong. You are safe.
