Hi Mac, You can get horses (young ones with little breeding or older ones with serious behavior issues) for as little as $100 - $300. However - I'd never recommend this. To get a decent horse you are able to ride for awhile, you will spend at least $1,000. If you are a first time horse owner and not really interested in showing I suggest a 10 years plus gelding with little/no pedigree and not much flash. He will cost about $1000 - $1500. The minute you start adding popular coat colors (ex. gray), registration, and younger horses able to compete more the price goes up. If you'd like to do some regional show and have a more 'upper class' horse you should be able to get one for about $2,500 - $3,500. This also depends on where you live and where you look. If you want to use the web I recommend http://www.equine.com , http://agdirect.com , and http://www.equinehits.com . I've found that by doing things the cheapest way that will still give my horses a healthy life I can keep them for about $1,700 each a year. However, to be safe I'd estimate $2,000 a horse per year, giving medical emergencies and the extra cost of first year horse owner. Hope it all works out, remember not to jump into anything. Do a trial period, don't wear your heart on your sleeve, and take your trainer with and go by their advice.

So much depends in the horse world. You can buy an untrained, unregiestered foal for less than $500, but you can buy and untrained regestered foal for anywhere between $500 up to thousands of dollars. You can buy a trained unregistered horse for anywhere in between $800 to a few thousand, or you can buy one that has had show training, competes and all that really cool stuff for $5000 or more. to keep a horse yearly for me, is between $800 and $1200. I spend about $40 on feed every month, then there are farrier costs, and annual vaccinations. In the winter I buy hay which runs me about $200 for the season.

How much you initially purchase your horse for is a big variable-you can spend $500-to $50,000 and up-my horse was $10,000 and he wasn't saddle broke yet!I have to board my horse and it costs around $400 a month and up where I live. I shoe my horse every 6 wks at $100.00 a pop and just spent $150 to have some dental work done.I worm my horse myself every 6-8wks and that costs around $8.00.Each spring I spend approx. $120 for vaccinations/Coggins testing and do a booster in the fall. This is just basic care and doesn't count the endless purchases for equipment, riding lessons,feed/supplements or training.Don't even let me start with the money I spend on horse shows!

FEED
Hay (20 lb./day x 365 days = 7300 lb. or 3.65 tons x $120 per ton = $438.00
Grain (4 lb./day x 365 days = 1460 # x .20/lb.) = 292.00

BEDDING
Bedding (1 bag/wk. X $5/bag) = $260.00

VETERINARY SUPPLIES AND CARE
Immunizations = $60.00
Deworming 6 times per year x $10 = $60.00
Dental and Misc. Vet Maintenance = $100.00
Farm call charges = $75.00

FARRIER
Shoeing 6 times at $80 = $480.00
Trimming 3 times at $25 = $75.00

TOTAL $1840.00

And thats just the caring!

A horse can go for at LEAST $2000

It's impossible to answer, really. It depends on so many factors, some you can control and some you can't. One of my MIL horses became ill and $10,000 later, he's back to himself.
