A metal giant on a beach is defeated by the heroes unplugging a hole in the sole of his foot to release what I think was oil? From what I remember the film was in the vein of a Jason of the Agronauts/Harryhausen adeventure. Can anyone tell me what it was or did I just dream it one night?

This is the Film Jason and the Argonauts. Jason and the crew of the Argus are directed to the island of bronze, by the Goddess Hera, to pick up food and water ONLY.
But Hercules and Hilas come across the statue of the Titan Talos. In his pedestal is a hord of gold and jewels and they take some.
Talos comes to life and wreecks havoc on Jason and the rest of the crew. It is the Goddess Hera, that tells Jason to go for the opening at Talo's ankle. Jason uses a spear to open the plug and the fluid runs out and Talos is done for.

Definately "Jason and the Argonauts" I've seen it about 20 times! Or you could be getting two things mixed up. There is a book called "The Iron man" I have read this 3 times to myself, twice as child and once to my children.

I think it was an Argonauts film....the metal giant bit was supposed to be "achilles heal" with letting the oil out his heal took away his inner being!

Jason and the argonauts definitely. you may have been confused with the similar film, clash of the titans.
