Why is it that normal, bright, intelligent people are so easily influenced by celebrities? More to the point, why do celebrities think that they should influence people? Let's face it, they're no different to you and I, in fact most are probably less intelligent and well-rounded. After all, they're only actors or singers, not scientists or great philosophers, or anything like that. Attention seekers, I guess.

FAO Jane b - actually, they don't - I'm just a bit concerned that the general public are being dumbed-down by these limelight grabbers - I couldn't care less about them individually!

Are you trying to tell me that actors and singers really do not know more than the rest of us? How can that be? They are on TV, the radio, in the newspaper, saying whatever is on their minds and you say they really do not know more than the rest of us. Even though many of them have little education or formal training in what they are talking about, I thought they had been given some divine knowledge to guide us....how can this not be so?

I am not influenced by celebrities. Anyway, scientists and great philosophers are celebrities too, even when in a different way and people can be influenced by this kind of 'ideal picture'.
I think we try to look like genial persons before to be fair, handsome,sexy and so on ...
Dreaming of ourself as a Genius is our favourite dream.
A silly dream indeed, like all the others.

they are much like us but many of them have talent we dont. theyre obviously in showbiz or stardom for a reason...many work hard to get where they are and you cant really be famous without talent. its not really celebrities as a whole we are influenced by. a few of them are exceptional people... just like there would be a few regular people that are better than others. sometimes you just see that exceptional person and it just clicks you know. it doesnt have to do with their money..like i said its their talent and quite possibly their personality. its not what they have its who they are that attracts us.
maybe some could be influenced by regular people..the regular people just hasnt had a chance to show their good qualities too.
celebrities are more influenced because you see them more often and you are aware of who they are, what they do..
and i think another reason could be because some are popular but they dont let it go to their head. how do you know if a regular person would be like that? its their reaction to the media that intrigues us.
but not everybody is influenced by a celebrity..you can see many people who are influenced by their family.
youre generalizing celebrities...not all celebrites think they should influence people and theyre not attention seekers. some are just happy doing what they love to do, they dont care if people like it or not. theyre just doing it because they enjoy it..not because they think others will. theyre also happy being who they are..if they have people honoring/modeling after them then fine they appreciate it but those celebs dont care if you are influenced by them or not.
see youre basing celebrities on Paris Hilton..and some of them arent like her at all.

yes your right, they are no better than any of us. some times i think it's the media that build them up to be more than they are too. also some of them think they are better than us as they may have more money than us but are they happier really????? money is not every thing in life.
