actually, i'm creating an image of my os on an external HDD. then, i'll copy the image to another comp and burn a DVD-R or DVD+R from it. so.. my original comp can boot from this drive with the os image.

however, if my comp only has a DVD-ROM and no DVD burner, i was wondering whether booting from a DVD-R or DVD+R was possible?

How can you perform the backup onto a DVD without a DVD burner? If you have a basic disc from which to restore your system to its original configuration, and its on a DVD already, you should be able to read it on your DVD player that is in the computer. If someone else made the backup on another computer, your DOS may reject the disk because the computers are supposed to recognize that a restore comes from a different system. Good luck.

Now, with the additional details I can answer "YES." You don't need a burner for this set-up; effectively you have a DVD burner for your system, even though it is external. Just run the restore process after putting your restore disk into your internal player.

I don't undx. you. How can you back up an image to DVD R without a DVD burner.? This is #1 requirement before you back it up on a DVD.

DVD burner (or another word, recorder) will also read a CD. It will also record on (or burn on) a CD.

If you have a CD burner, then back up on a CD - this is your best bet.

Alternatively, if you have two computers, you can network using serial cables, as what is called peer to peer networking. XP will do this nicely using the network wizard. I do not know what you are trying to do, but if you are transferring from one to the other then this method is best.

If you just want to keep a backup copy of your critical files, fact remains you either need a CD or DVD burner., preferably DVD burner which does both.

Yes, you can make DVD backups even if you have no DVD burners. My suggestion is to use a DVD backup tool for creating your DVD copies from a DVD-R to your PC's hard disk..
U could check the listed tools in the following source, hope it will help :)
By the way, plz give me a plus if my answer helps.

yes, of caurse. if you have a DVD drive then you will be able to restore system image. But be careful, make sure that you DVD-ROM supports the type of DVD disk you used for burning the image, i mean DVD-R, DVD+R, some of DVD-ROMs don't supports both types.
