the calender method is one of the least accurate ways to prevent pregnancy you need to understand exactly how it works before you try it and you need to know your cycle 100%
women ovulate 14 days before the first day of there next period (it has nothing to do with when you stopped your last period so if you dont know when exactly you will start this is not the right method for you!)
sperm can live in your body for up to 7 days and your egg will survive 24 hours after ovulation
that means you are safe to not use protection 12 days before the start of your next period, during that period, and up to 22 days before the period after that.
(mark the day you will get your next period on the calender, count back 14 days and mark that day as ovulation, now cross off the 7 days prior and the day after, the days that are marked are your UNSAFE days assuming you know what day your period will start)
if you have a very short cycle (less than two weeks) you may not have any "safe days"

Yes it is never safe not to use any protection any time of month. Even condoms and other such things also fail. My sister-in-law got pregnant even while using a contraceptive device and we were able to conceive a child through a rip in the condom.
Time also doesn't matter, our first child was conceived on after the fourth day or period.

It is never really safe to not use protection against pregnancy, but if you have regular periods, I would say for up to a week. If you are that concerned, just use protection all the time. Good luck!

The only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancy is to abstain from sex. That means absolutely no genital to genital contact whatsoever. My wife had a tubal ligation (tubes tied) and even that has a 1 in 300 chance of pregnancy.

It is never safe to not use protection unless you want to get pregnant as you "can" get pregnant at any time in your cycle.
