Can this be done?and what would be the best way to do this???

There's a commercial product on the market (several name brands) that will bleach wood. For previously stained lumber, it means it will remove the old stain. Sanding will also work, but the advantage of the bleaching is you can use it where there is intricate work without worrying about sanding away the details.

Sanding is the only way I know of to do it. And if you laid the stain on thick you're in for a lot of sanding. Good Luck.

the finish is probably shellac. she lac will break down with denatured alcohol try rubbing your piece with a alcohol soaked rag in an inconspicuous place that should stat to breakdown the finish take care not to remove all the finish keep in mind by altering the finish you will be taking away from it's value
