Most oils today are fine, depending on your driving conditions and weather. For older cars with more than 100,000 miles, Valvoline makes a high mileage engine oil with excellent qualities at a very reasonable price, about 1/2 the cost of synthetic oils.
It's MORE important to change your oil on a regular basis, 3,000 miles is more than adequate for most people's driving habits, but is very important to the life of the engine that it be changed regularly. 5W30 and 10W30 are the recommended weight oils for most cars since the 1980's

I'd strongly advise the use of Mobil1 Synthetic motor oil. 5W30 if the car is new.
