I left school at 17 because I did not want to go to University and preferred working my way up and needed the money. It would be horrible to see our schools full of people who really didn't want to be there - are they really going to learn much if they'd rather be doing something else. I think if they're going to train to be a nurse or join the army they should be allowed to leave. Perhaps they should make it that if they can prove they have a job to go to they are allowed to leave but otherwise have to stay.

The government should focus on making sure that when kids do leave school, they can at least (as a very minimum) read and write. Just look at some of the spelling here on Yahoo. Keeping a 16-17-18 year-old in scool is indeed, a very hard task. Parents can't even keep 12-13 year-olds in school, what chance do they have keeping them until they are 18? That's a bit laughable. But then again, the government is focusing on something other than what they should focus on.

Read the executive summary of the Leitch Review. There's some depressing reading about how badly the UK performs compared to the rest of the world in terms of skills and education. I think that's a strong argument for raising the school leaving age.

It is also well-researched that better education has all sorts of social benefits too - the higher the level of education the lower the rates of social exclusion, ill health, deprivation, crime etc etc not to mention the higher earning capacity.

What's more, education is hereditary. If you come from a well-educated family you are much more likely to get a good education yourself and so the cycle continues.

Unfortunatley it's not as simple as the Government want to make it. They are doing it to reduce the number of unemployed teenagers to help figures. By the same token if they put the school leaving age up to 25 they'll be doing even better!

If they are serious about this, they need to allow streaming in secondary schools so that we can make the following choices for teenagers coming up to 16.
1) Good academically, streamed to go through to further education, both arts and scientific.
2) Good technically, put forward for technical training as mechanic, engineer, plumber etc.
3) Neither of above. Helped to find suitable employment.

Yes, category three might not have the greatest jobs in the world included, but many of them are very important be it a "bin-man" or roadsweeper, cleaner or factory worker, for the infrastructure of society.

I think it is a very good idea. I am from South Africa and we leave school at the age of 18 and believe it or not our knowledge is much better than some English people I have met here.

Although it sounds like a good idea to make sure that everyone has some form of higher eductation, I still feel that people should have a choice. Sometimes I think that a college education should be left to a later stage in life when people have some idea about what they actually want to do instead of jumping in and doing what they think they would enjoy and coming out with qualifications that they can't use. Leave it to peoples own choice I say!

No, bad idea - we still need ditch diggers, cleaners, other unskilled work - and to leave the colleges for the students that WANT to be there.
